Waiting On...THE NATURALS by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

I've had some hits and some misses by Jennifer Lynn Barnes but, more often than not, I've really enjoyed her stories. When I heard there was a new book coming out by her, I had to check it out. I love the concept of teens solving cold cases using their natural abilities though, reading the blurb again, it looks like there's a set-up for a love triangle. I hope not. Because that would kill this story for me. *fingers crossed*

I'm *not* a fan of this cover. The girl looks constipated and the whole thing looks kind of junky, like there's too much thrown onto it. The capitol, a chalk outline, odd coloring, a lurking boy in a hoodie, crime scene tape...it's kind of a hot mess. Maybe they'll do a better redesign before finally releasing this thing in November.

YA paranormal thriller
304 pages, hardcover
Expected publication: November 5, 2013
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides— especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.

Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

Waiting on is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

  1. This does sound good. I like the cover but agree that her expression is a little weird and she looks stiff or something.

  2. There is something about Jennifer Lyn Barns books that I like ! But you are right they can easily be a hit or miss! The last one I read was Every Other Day which I adored... (even though I'm a little sad it's not getting a sequel).
Still, I'm for sure going to check this out!

    1. I Liked but didn't love Every Other Day, though I would have liked to see it as a sequel, too!

  3. I'm not a fan of this cover either, to be honest, Mary, although there are some good things about it. The story, however, sounds very interesting, with the exception of the hinted love triangle. That would totally ruin it for me too.
I haven't read any of JLB's books, but I'll definitely be reading this one.

  6. I LOVE LOVE LOVE her werewolf series, it's one of my favorites, but Nobody was a bit "meh" for me. Like you though, I more often than not really enjoy her books and always look forward to seeing what she comes up with. This one sounds really interesting, but I'm crossing my fingers with you for no love triangle!

    1. Me, TOO!! I wasn't the biggest NOBODY fan and EVERY OTHER DAY was pretty good but not awesome.

NO LOVE TRIANGLE, please! *prays to book gods*

  7. I haven't read anything by Barnes but I keep meaning to. I agree with you on the cover. It reminds me of a James Patterson cover.

  9. Jennifer Lynn Barnes is one of those authors where I own every single books she's released and haven't read a single one. This sounds really interesting though. I don't mind the cover, but it doesn't grab me either.

  10. Great pick! I pretty consistently enjoy JLB's stories. But I agree, this cover is a disaster area. It feels too young, not badass enough. Hopefully they'll heed your advice and revamp before it comes out.

  11. I agree about this cover. I like the crime tape and the guy in the background wearing the hoodie, but that's about it. It does sound really good though!

    1. It needs to be pared down a bit. Focus on the big elements, like the ones you named, ditch the rest.

  12. It looks more like an adult thriller covers (which are usually horrid) but it does sound interesting :)

    1. Those adult thriller covers *are* horrible! At least the premise shines through.

  13. I love the sound of this one-I didn't even notice all the elements on the cover until I took a second, a third, even a fourth look so maybe they're just trying to make sure you keep looking?

  14. You're right that from the blurb it seems there might be a love triangle :/ I think i've had enough of those for now :P And i'm not crazy about the cover either. And her hands look really weird.. actually, i think her whole body from the yellow crime tape and under looks weird, like it's been badly photoshopped :/ But the story seems really intriguing and interesting.

  19. I'm excited for this one, too. I love the idea of helping with cold cases. I'm with you, though, that cover is a hot mess with way too many things going on, especially hoodie guy who looks like he's supposed to be menacing at 4'11". Great pick!
